Ground Zero. Where we stand today.

Over the last 33 months the site’s booking engine recorded 1,459 direct bookings, about 44 a month. Demand exists, it is measured, and it is growing.

The channel bringing the most bookings is Google search: 30% of the total. Above direct traffic and three times more than paid advertising.

This report is about that channel: how it performs today, what is being lost, and what to do so it performs better before high season starts.

About the booking figures. They come from Google Analytics, based on the purchase tracking configured on the site — not from the hotel’s accounting. They are useful for comparing the weight of one channel against another, which is where they are reliable. They are not accounting figures and should not be read as such.

The essentials

Four conclusions

If you read only one part of this report, read this one. Every figure below is backed up later with its source.

01
30%

Google is already the channel bringing the most direct bookings

30% of direct bookings are credited to organic search, ahead of direct traffic and three times above paid advertising. It is the hotel’s number one channel — and the one performing furthest below its ceiling.

02
39%

Four in ten people who search for the hotel by name end up somewhere else

TripAdvisor, Booking, Expedia and agencies take 39% of clicks on the brand search. That is demand already earned, handed to intermediaries who charge commission on a room the hotel had already sold.

Mentions of the hotel in AI answers

Across 101 answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google about where to stay in Monteverde, a competitor is named. Valle Escondido appears in none. And yet 294 visits already arrived from AI assistants, and one of them ended in a booking: the channel exists even though the hotel is not in it.

04
16,991 → 7

The restaurant page gets visits and does not convert

It is the site's second most visited page with 16,991 sessions, and it produced 7 bookings in 33 months. People arrive, spend 31 seconds and leave. This is not a traffic problem: there is no path from there to a booking.

The problem is not that Valle Escondido is a small hotel. It is that it competes as a hotel in a market where what people search for is the forest.

The plan

Two time windows

High season starts in late November and people book Costa Rica months ahead, so anything published in December already arrives late for this season. That is why the work splits in two.

Now · before the season

Recover what is already ours

None of this needs new content. It is fixing and claiming.

  1. Fix site speed 110 of the site's 139 pages load slowly. On six of them the server responds so slowly that AI crawlers cannot finish reading. If the robot cannot read the page, there is nothing for it to cite.
  2. Add titles and descriptions to the pages missing them 36 pages have no main heading and 58 have no description. To a search engine or an AI, a page with no heading is a page with no subject.
  3. Claim the listing on the official tourism site visitcostarica.com, run by the Costa Rican Tourism Board, links to four Monteverde competitors and not to Valle Escondido. It is free, it is institutional and it carries real weight.
  4. Convert the 12 domain redirects The alternate domains redirect with a code Google reads as temporary, so their value never consolidates into the main site. Switching them to permanent takes minutes.
  5. Connect the restaurant page to booking 16,991 visits and 7 bookings over 33 months. It is the site's second most viewed page and it leads nowhere. An availability block and a clear call to action is a day's work on traffic that already exists.
  6. Measure bookings on the other sites The nature reserve gets 30,213 visits and the course site 15,358, and neither measures whether anyone books or enquires. Without that it is impossible to know what works. The hotel already has it set up properly; this is replicating it.
  7. Publish three cloud forest wildlife articles The raccoon article reached position 2 unaided. Three more on species actually seen in the reserve — quetzal, coati, three-wattled bellbird — target searches with near-zero difficulty. With one condition: each must lead to booking. The raccoon one brought 340 visits and zero bookings because it leads nowhere.
Six months · the foundations

Stop being invisible

Deeper work that does not pay off in weeks, but without which the hotel stays out of the answers.

  1. Build the cloud forest library Ten to fifteen articles that can reach Google's top 3, not fifty that fill a blog. Written from the private reserve, with documented species and original photography: that is what no competitor can copy.
  2. Get into the sources AI reads Lonely Planet, Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, La Nación and Wikivoyage have covered the competitors and never Valle Escondido. Those pages are where the assistants draw their recommendations from.
  3. Take the three empty fronts In the permaculture course, the restaurant and AVER nobody leads yet. These are markets where nothing has to be displaced, only reached first. The course is also the only part of the ecosystem with a direct sale price.
  4. Activate the species library Virtual Permaculture holds 59 top-3 Google positions and six times the traffic of the page that sells the course. Today it leads nowhere. It is the group's most underused asset.
  5. Measure every month A system is already in place that checks weekly whether the hotel appears in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google. Today it reads zero: that is the baseline everything will be measured against.
The evidence

What we found

1. Where the bookings come from today

Google Analytics has been measuring bookings since January 2024, including the SiteMinder booking engine. This is what each channel contributed over 33 months.

Google search is the channel producing the most direct bookings
Each channel’s weight in direct bookings, January 2024 – October 2026
Google search 30%, referrals from other sites 24%, direct 21%, paid advertising 11%, unidentified 11%, social and other 3% Google search 30 % Referrals from other sites 24 % Direct 21 % Paid advertising 11 % Unidentified 11 % Social, campaigns and other 3 % Total: 1,459 bookings recorded over 33 months
Source: Google Analytics 4, Valle Escondido Hotel property, 1 Jan 2024 – 8 Oct 2026. Percentages calculated over the bookings Analytics recorded: measured, not estimated.

This is what changes the conversation. It is not about "being more visible": it is about the channel that already produces 30% of direct sales and is performing below its ceiling.

And one detail is worth noting: referrals convert at 2.45%, three times better than search, with a quarter of the visits. These are people arriving from another website that talked about the hotel. It is exactly the kind of visit press and travel guides produce, and it is the most direct argument for the reputation work described later in this report.

And from which countries

The same measurement, broken down by the visitor’s country. No estimates here: these are bookings the site recorded one by one.

Netherlands734223.00%
Germany570193.33%
Switzerland720131.81%
Spain366184.92%

North America brings 73% of recorded bookings. Europe together, 10%.

And look at Costa Rica: it is the second largest audience with 29,482 visitors, converting at 0.52% against 2.33% for the United States. It brings 35% of the audience and 11% of the bookings. This is not an audience to win — it is an audience already there that does not book.

2. Brand demand is leaking away

Someone typing "Valle Escondido Monteverde" into Google has already decided. They know the hotel and are looking for it. This is what they find.

Who captures the clicks on a search for the hotel's own name
Estimated monthly clicks, search "valle escondido monteverde"

The 96 clicks that leave are not lost customers: most of them still book the hotel. But they do it through platforms that charge commission on every booking. Same guest, thinner margin.

3. Invisible to artificial intelligence

More and more travellers ask ChatGPT or Google where to stay instead of opening ten tabs. We reviewed the full history of AI answers indexed by Ahrefs — ChatGPT, Gemini, Google's AI summaries and Google's AI mode — across seven countries, looking for each brand in the group.

Source: Ahrefs Brand Radar historical index, queried 8 October 2026. Covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Mexico and Costa Rica.

There is an obvious reading and a useful one. The obvious: the group is at zero. The useful: these five fronts are not the same problem. In lodging and reserves there are established owners and getting in means displacing someone. In permaculture, restaurant and AVER the entire market adds up to under six mentions: there is no leader, and the permaculture course is already among the most mentioned in its category.

Appearing in an AI answer cannot be bought with size. Curi-Cancha Reserve has one tenth of Selvatura's traffic and exactly the same 30 mentions.

What separates them is not the website: it is that Curi-Cancha appears in travel blog listicles, Reddit threads and TripAdvisor. That is what the models read.

4. There are two markets and the hotels fight in the small one

Hotel Belmar, Senda and Monteverde Lodge simultaneously contest fourteen searches of the "monteverde hotel" or "monteverde resorts" type. Together they are worth 350 searches a month. Next to it sits the destination market.

Real size of the two markets
Monthly searches in the United States, adding up each group's keywords
The destination market is worth 21,300 searches a month; the hotel market, 350 Questions about the destination “what is a cloud forest”, “monteverde costa rica”, “cloud forest animals”… 21,300 Monteverde hotel searches “monteverde hotel”, “monteverde resorts”, “luxury hotel monteverde”… 350 — with three hotels competing for it
Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer and Site Explorer, United States, October 2026. Both bars are to the same scale.

Of the sixteen large searches in the destination market, fourteen belong to a single site: the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It sells no rooms. It competes to define what Monteverde means, and it wins. It went from 154 monthly visits in October 2024 to nearly 7,000 today.

5. The only hotel that grew this year is the smallest one

Source: Ahrefs Site Explorer, estimated organic traffic. These are estimates: useful for comparing domains with each other, not as absolute visit counts. Valle Escondido is not in this chart because for it we have the real Google Search Console measurement, shown below.
+40%
Valle Escondido, measured with Google Search Console 813 clicks from Google over the last 30 days, against 582 in the same period a year earlier. The hotel is growing in the channel that brings it the most bookings: the problem is not the trend, it is the ceiling.

Ocotea Boutique Hotel is the lowest-authority site in the group — less than half of Valle Escondido's — and the only one that grew. The detail matters: its hotel page gets 30 visits a month and its blog gets 850. And the blog does not talk about the hotel. It talks about the quetzal, Costa Rican fruit, the weather month by month in Monteverde.

The good news for Valle Escondido: Ocotea writes about the quetzal without owning a reserve. Valle Escondido has a private reserve, certified guides, a night tour and a farm. It can write the version nobody else can copy.

6. The state of the group's seven sites

Technical health is a 0 to 100 score measuring how many of a site's pages carry errors that get in Google's way. The hotel site, the one that has to convert bookings, is the worst in the whole group.

7. The site with 716 pages and 84 visits

Virtual Permaculture is a library of plant and animal fact sheets. It is the site with the most pages in the whole group — 716 — and the least visited: 84 sessions over 33 months.

What is puzzling is that, according to ranking tools, the site appears at the top of Google for searches with real demand:

Search Searches/mo Position
pacaya8,9002
mono capuchino2,40011
zacate limón para qué sirve7003
chaya fruto5001
planta cucaracha5001
guatusa hondureña1501

First position on Google for searches with hundreds or thousands of monthly queries, and 84 visits in almost three years. Both cannot be true at once, and that is a finding in itself: either the site's measurement is incomplete, or the positions the tools report do not correspond to searches that actually bring people there.

It is the only item in this report left unresolved, and resolving it is cheap: simply check that the measurement code is on all 716 pages. If the traffic does exist and was not being measured, it is the biggest opportunity in the ecosystem. If it does not exist, there are 716 pages serving nobody and a decision to make about them.

On the table

The concrete opportunities

Real searches, with real people behind them, served today neither by Valle Escondido nor by any of the three hotels fighting over "monteverde hotel". The difficulty column runs 0 to 100: below 15 it can be won with a good article and without needing other sites to link to us.

Valle Escondido already sits at position 2 for "cloud forest animals", 200 searches a month, thanks to a single unplanned article about a raccoon.

That article accumulated 65,843 appearances on Google over the past year. No new strategy needs discovering: what is needed is to stop publishing one of these every few years.

Glossary

The terms used above, explained without jargon.

Domain authority
A 0 to 100 score estimating how much Google trusts a site, based mostly on how many web pages link to it. Valle Escondido has 26; Ocotea, which grew this year, has 11. It is not destiny: it is an indicator, and it does not decide who wins.
Keyword difficulty
A 0 to 100 score estimating how hard it is to reach Google's first page for that search. Below 15, a good article is usually enough. Above 40 it takes months of work and links from other sites.
AI answers and why they matter
When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google itself "where should I stay in Monteverde?", they get a written answer naming three or four recommended hotels, instead of a list of links. If the hotel is not in that answer, it does not exist for that traveller. Those answers are built by reading third-party pages: travel guides, forums, TripAdvisor and blogs.
Site technical health
A 0 to 100 score summarising how many of a site's pages have defects that get in Google's way: slowness, broken links, missing titles, pages that cannot be found. It is unrelated to design or copy quality; it is about the internal mechanics.
Structured data
An invisible data sheet inside each page telling the search engine, in a format it can read without interpreting: this is a hotel, it is in Monteverde, it has these rooms, it costs this, it opens at this hour. It is what lets Google and AI show price, rating and availability without entering the site.
Permanent and temporary redirects
When an alternate domain leads to the main site, it can tell Google one of two things: "I moved for good" or "I'm just passing through". With the first, Google understands the definitive address is the new one and transfers the accumulated value. With the second, it keeps treating both as separate. The group's twelve alternate domains are using the second.
Impressions and clicks
An impression is every time a page of the site shows up in Google results, whoever sees it. A click is when someone actually enters. The raccoon article had 65,843 impressions and 233 clicks: many people saw it on Google, read the summary Google generated, and had no need to enter.
